Teacher Andy McHaffie has helped students hone their woodworking, metal working and drafting skills in his Fort Zumwalt East High School classrooms for years. Understanding the needs of St. Charles County manufacturers, and his student’s willingness to work hard, he set out to build a bridge from Fort Zumwalt high schools to jobs in high needs areas. The steering committee has been gathering data and conducting surveys to help define the focus of its work as Fort Zumwalt creates its guiding document for the next three years.
At the meeting tonight, participants will hear from the committee about its work so far and have the opportunity to ask questions about the CSIP process and the district’s goals.

Checking in at @ZumTwinChimneys as first graders tackle the Hour of Code. Technology teacher Rachel Boucher finds a way to create space for students to work on their own while providing support to each as she crosses the room. After about 15 minutes working out how patterns in the game build the code they need to reach the next level, Boucher asks them to remove their headphones so they can check in. Students are able to name their emotions (frustrated, confused, OK) and the class takes turns sharing opinions on the game.
“I’d rate it a five,” one student says with a small eye roll, adding that the game would have rated higher if Level 22 had been cleared.
Others agree, and are excited to learn they weren’t the only ones to get stuck on 22. With the feedback, Boucher changes course, creating time to collaborate and problem solve, laying the foundation for #21stCenturySkills. #TeacherProud #careerteched

Checking in before break at Twin Chimneys. Amy Houston’s fourth-graders were trying to wrangle a science lesson inspired by a story they read about cowboys. Working in teams to engineer a lasso out of plastic shopping bags, the students had to design and test their creation and throwing technique on their chairs. While none of the throwing techniques matched those they had read about, several managed to rustle up their runaways and bring them back to the herd. #TeacherProud

Welcome to Finance Friday, some insight to school finance. Did you know 9.4% of FZSD'S operating budget comes from personal property tax? This year, that’s $22.5 million toward services such as optimum class sizes, utilities and internet, or materials such as cleaning supplies or curriculum. Missouri school districts are funded through local taxes, state funding (which is allocated by the legislature and can be withheld by the governor to balance the state budget) and federal funding that typically is designated for specific expenditures or is one-time money.
Local revenue sources make local schools possible.
Checking in at Forest Park, Comic Con, where fourth graders debuted their original stories featuring a superhero. Students wrote for four weeks. Along the way they learned about narrators and characters, about the importance of putting events in order and about using a variety of tools to describe things to the reader. There were plenty of masked marvels on hand sharing their stories aloud. Some struck a pose, including their SuperTeachers, who are reinforcing the learning standards students have been striving to meet:
