Sarah Macek, like the rest of us, knew the weather would be changing soon. So, on one of those final warmish days, she took her Kindergarteners to the outdoor classroom at JL Mudd Elementary. They had been focusing on reading informational texts and facts in the book "Life in a Pond" so they explored their own pond for some writing and illustration inspiration. Not sure the weather could have been better as the Class of 2031 (AKA 5th grade) crisscrossed curriculum in the great outdoors. They dissected owl pellets, problem solved, geo-cached and took in wildlife presentations. Educate, Empower & #FZEquipToExcel

Administrators at North Middle School were all in when longtime assistant principal’s secretary Sue Bigogno proposed a way to share her love of gardening with students. Bigogno was able to start some plants in the outdoor classroom and soon had help from Student Council in caring for the small garden. This summer, Bigogno tried some new varieties of tomato plants in the garden while the students were on break. Those plants didn’t make it, but it’s OK because this is the story of a #FZCommunity garden. When Hermann’s Farms learned Bigogno was sharing her love of gardening with students, they donated new plants to the cause. A few weeks into the school year, StuCo volunteers and Bigogno returned to the garden to cut pumpkins from the vine. Teacher Kaitlyn Uhlenbrock brought her class out to finish the harvest and the pumpkins were delivered to staff around the school in time to decorate for October, along with a small crop of tomatoes. #FZEquipToExcel

The Missouri Association of School Personnel Administrators (MO-ASPA) recently announced its Human Resources Administrator of the Year, Fort Zumwalt School District Executive Director of Human Resources Erin Williams, center.
Williams, who joined the district in 2018, has been integral in helping Fort Zumwalt navigate the tight hiring market of the past few years. From her creativity in recruitment techniques to her willingness to be a resource for the 1,500-plus support staff personnel she serves, Williams has shown a commitment to the Fort Zumwalt community and a relentless positivity about what it means to serve students each and every day. She has been an advocate for those in support staff categories, serving as a voice in improving salaries and work-life balance and striving to recruit the highest caliber candidates she can for the district’s transportation, custodial, student nutrition, clerical and special education departments.
Congrats!

If you give a student a cookie, they might enroll in a culinary class.
If you teach a student in culinary class:
You educate them in math, science, & best practices.
You empower them to create, collaborate & problem solve.
You equip them to cook at home or go pro.
And, when you equip them to cook, they might make you a cookie.
Thanks, Hope High Culinary II students!
