Congratulations to Regan Crowder and Brian Hruby, honorees at the annual Emerson Excellence in Teaching Awards!
Crowder is a fifth-grade teacher at Mid Rivers Elementary, recognized for her “passion for teaching, commitment to professional growth, and dedication to student success.” According to her nomination, since Crowder joined Mid Rivers in 2021 she has become a trusted resource for her colleagues as they have collaborated to implement a new reading curriculum. “Her greatest strength is her ability to make learning accessible and meaningful for every student. Students frequently share how she has motivated them to read independently. Her organized, purposeful classroom reflects the high expectations she holds while maintaining an atmosphere of warmth, respect, and encouragement.”
Hruby is a math teacher at West High School recognized for how he “has challenged students to grow academically and personally while creating a classroom environment where students feel supported, capable, and valued.” His commitment to meeting each student where they are is best summarized in the professional development he has sought to strengthen his ability to teach English Learner Algebra 1. “Recognizing the unique challenge of learning rigorous mathematics while simultaneously developing English proficiency, Brian has pursued professional development focused on making mathematical language accessible to English Learners,” according to his nomination. “He continually adapts his instruction to meet students’ needs without lowering expectations. His ability to combine high standards with individualized support helps students build both mathematical skills and confidence.”
The Emerson Award is presented annually to outstanding St. Louis area educators from Kindergarten to college professors. More than 100 will be honored at a ceremony Nov. 22. Congratulations to Hruby and Crowder!
