This week Fort Zumwalt School District students grades 6-12 join all Missouri secondary public school students in recognizing the National Days of Remembrance, which Congress established in 1979 and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) leads for the country each year. It is an addition to the list of recognitions the state requires for public schools as required by Senate Bill 681, which was signed into law in 2022. The week is a time to pause and reflect on the atrocities that occurred between 1933-1945 under the Nazi regime and its collaborators, specifically the systematic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of six million Jews known as the Holocaust. It will be marked with age-appropriate activities rooted in the state’s curriculum framework for Holocaust Education.
Families and residents can also join the observance. USHMM offers several virtual resources. In addition to its virtual resources, those looking for an in-person experience can find opportunities at the St. Louis Kaplan Feldman Holocaust Museum.
