Special Education teachers Krystal Deterding and Katie Harting Scoles are among about 100 regional educators recognized by the Emerson Excellence in Teaching Awards.

A West High graduate, Deterding joined the South Middle team as a paraprofessional in 2012. Having earned bachelor’s degrees in Communication-Journalism and Global Communication, she earned a Master’s in Teaching and moved into a full-time Special Education teaching position at the school in 2017. She is this year’s Fort Zumwalt School District Educator of the Year.
“Krystal exemplifies excellence in education through her passion, creativity, and commitment to students,” her nomination read. “Her ability to build authentic relationships with students creates a safe, judgment-free environment where learners feel confident to take risks, overcome challenges, and grow academically and behaviorally.”

Harting graduated from East High in 2013 and joined the North High staff in 2017. She has a Master’s in Teaching and also coaches cheer.
“As a special education teacher and cheer coach, Katie goes above and beyond to meet the diverse needs of her students,” her nomination read. “She often gives up her planning time to help with credit recovery, missing assignments, coping skills, or even personal challenges that extend beyond the classroom. By addressing the whole child, she ensures that students not only succeed academically, but also develop the confidence and resilience needed for life beyond school. Her colleagues admire her innovation and steady leadership.”
