Today our schools recognize Constitution and Citizenship Day. This combined observance began in 1940 as "I Am An American Day". It was moved from the third Sunday in May to Sept. 17 and renamed to Citizenship Day in 1952. In 2004, Congress renamed the holiday again to its current Constitution and Citizenship Day, which commemorates the signing of the United States Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787.
Families and residents can also join the observance, through an interactive activity or a shared learning experience.
