Summer work, made possible by voter approval of Prop 4 in 2022, is underway. At the new Transportation Center, weather has slowed site preparation, but work is underway near Iffrig & Salt River Roads, including progress on the building itself.
Five schools are getting HVAC upgrades and replacements: Forest Park, JL Mudd, Mid Rivers, Mount Hope and South Middle. The new units are more efficient and create a quieter classroom environment. At some of our older schools, the improvements mean ceiling fans that have been in place for decades are no longer needed.
At North Middle a new parking lot off of Sonderen Street will be installed this summer.
Other projects underway this summer include:
Flooring and painting at East High, the first full update since the building opened in 2007.
Tennis courts at East High will be upgraded.
Roofing work at West High will be done over the gym and auditorium.
In addition, eight buildings will have roofing fully replaced, overlaid or patched. This insurance work is in response to the March 2024 hail storm.
The Board of Education also approved a physical needs assessment to help the district understand its needs and prioritize future projects. The report is expected later this year.
Voters approved FZ Prop 4, a $125-million no-tax-levy increase, in April 2022. This is the permission for the district to borrow money. It does not all have to be borrowed at the same time. Since 2022, the district has sold (borrowed) $75 million.
