As students in the Work Based Learning Program at East High wrapped up classes, they took a moment to celebrate the community partners who helped shape their school year. With the help of teacher Brooke Petry, along with job coach Sarah Lowrey, students presented the Partners in Possibility awards during a short reception.
“Our business partners truly are making such an impact on our students just by asking them to work at their job site,” Petry says. “They might never get that experience otherwise.”
Students rotated between four sites: Friendship Village, Jakes on Main, the Rec-Plex and the Spencer Road branch of the St. Charles City-County Library, spending two hours per week working on laundry and cleaning skills, sorting inventory and reshelving and withdrawing library materials.
“Our goal is that our students are ready for work after graduation,” Petry says.
Students who need extra development after graduation can participate in Fort Zumwalt’s Elevate program, another layer in Post-Secondary Transitions Services. Elevate students stock the district’s Resource Center with new and gently used clothing, school supplies and non-perishable food items. They also package weekend backpacks to go home with students across the district experiencing food insecurity. You can learn more at mcc.fz.k12.mo.us. Click the Elevate Academy button.
