Malinda Le, Rock Creek Elementary

First year teacher Malinda Le learned Friday at a school assembly that she is the 2024-2025 Rookie Teacher of the Year. Le teaches fourth grade at Rock Creek. Nominations were filled with examples of how students feel valued in her classroom.

“From day one, she has set high expectations in her classroom, creating a culture where every student is encouraged and expected to give their personal best,” one nomination reads. “Her belief in each child’s potential fosters a deep sense of personal pride among her students, motivating them to take ownership of their learning and behavior.”

There were also numerous mentions of Le’s professionalism and her ability to empower families as partners in their student’s education.

“She has built strong, trusting relationships with students and families, which enhances student engagement and success. Her communication with families is proactive, thoughtful, and centered on collaboration.”

Thank you, Malinda and Congratulations!

Sgroi poses with award and district administrators

Mariah Sgroi, Music Therapist

Mariah Sgroi is a first-year music therapist many FZSD employees might recognize. The 2024-2025 Support Staff Rookie of the Year works in 17 schools delivering music therapy to students that helps them improve motor skills.

“She jumped in with both feet, without hesitation, which is not easy to do as a traveling staff member,” one nomination reads. “She lugs around her wagon with her guitar or keyboard, tons of learning materials, and instruments for the kids so they can have the very best experience each therapy session.” Sgroi’s support for teachers was also highlighted as part of her focus on helping each of her students excel.

“When I'm feeling stuck because a student isn't making progress on his or her goal, I reach out to Mariah to see if she has a song that might help,” a nomination reads. “If she does, she drops it into a Google folder that she creates for each student so that all staff members who work with that student have access to it. If she doesn't have a song to fit the motor skill I’m targeting, she kindly offered to write a new song just for this scenario. Mariah is the epitome of a team player and wants to do everything she possibly can to support the special-education students in our district.” Thank you, Mariah, and Congratulations!

This year, more than 100 nominations were submitted for first-year teachers across the district. Thank you for your commitment to our mission. You Educate, You Empower and You Equip Students to Excel!
