Pearl Harbor Day

Today across Fort Zumwalt our schools recognize Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. On Dec. 7, 1941, Just before 8 a.m., hundreds of Japanese fighter planes descended on the American naval base near Honolulu on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. Nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight battleships, and more than 300 airplanes were damaged or destroyed. 2,403 service members and civilians were killed and 1,178 were injured during the attack. The next day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan.

Families and residents can also join the observance using resources from the National World War II Museum.
