The Fort Zumwalt North High School Jazz Band recently
attended a clinic with Doc Severinsen in Omaha, Nebraska. This group of students were chosen to be the featured group during a clinic conducted by Doc Severinsen. This clinic took place in front of 300 students from the other schools that attended the Great Plains Jazz Festival. Robby the Robot- C3PO- Wall-E- Atom- Movie robots have captured our imagination for decades. However, recent advances in robotic science are
transforming science fiction into reality. Many researchers are convinced
that personal robots will soon be as commonplace as computers. Career
opportunities in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and
Math (STEM) are also on the rise. Sadly, student interest in STEM degrees has not kept pace with demand. According to industry experts, the United States currently graduates only 50% of the engineers needed to sustain our economy. The shortage of female STEM graduates is even more pronounced.

However, the Fort Zumwalt School District is doing its part to help fill those vacancies. The 276 students who participate in Fort Zumwalt’s elementary gifted education program (JET) recently completed a ten-week Robotics
study. “Robotics affords us a great opportunity to introduce concepts of problem-solving, engineering, logic,
computer programming, math, physics and science in a fun and challenging environment. Through engineering and programming robots, students learn that there are many ways to solve a problem. Students also learn to
accomplish complex task by breaking the task into simpler parts. Through robotics, students learn that problem-solving can be fun and rewarding, and hopefully a good number of these students will go on to pursue STEM related careers.” -Michael Neill, Fort Zumwalt Secondary Mathematics Curriculum Coordinator

]]><![CDATA[West High Student is Selected by Music for All]]>Tue, 13 Mar 2012 15:42:17 -0600http://www.fz.k12.mo.us/3/post/2012/03/west-high-student-is-selected-by-music-for-all.htmlMichael Ferrante, a senior at Fort Zumwalt West High School, has been selected by Music for All to perform in one of the nation’s finest honor ensembles, the 2012 Jazz Band of America. Ferrante was selected from numerous applicants from across the nation for membership in this prestigious honor ensemble. Ferrante began studying the saxophone at the age of 12 and his love of music and playing ability has excelled since that time.
Ferrante has been a member of his high school jazz band for four years. He earned the lead tenor saxophone chair in the Missouri All State Jazz Band for three consecutive years, and earned lead alto saxophone chair for the past two years. He also has earned superior ratings at the Missouri State Solo and Ensemble Festival throughout his high school career. The Fort Zumwalt South High School Robotic Teams recently
attended the GM Lego Robotic Competition at St. Charles Community College. Two teams participated in different divisions and each team took first place in their respective divisions. By winning first place, each team received a $200 Lego Robotic Mindstorm kit from GM. The South High School Robotic Team sponsor, Mr. David Brown, stated, “It was a good day for the students.”
Pictured is Jeff Ciskowski, Jared Counts, Liam Porter, Allex Rector, and Joey Klix placed first in the Gray Division. The other team consisted of Alexandria Schmitt, Donovan Bowman, Corey Smith, Jesse Key, and Nick Girtman placed first in the Maroon Division.

We will be collecting new baby care items from March 12-April 20. Collection bins will be located outside the main office and grade level offices. Any donation is greatly appreciated. We would like to thank you in advance for your support.

the 11th Annual Donkey Basketball game on Wednesday, March 21 at 6:30
p.m. in the North High Gym. The FZN Seniors will take on the FZN Faculty;
then, the FZN Juniors will do battle with the Rock Creek Elementary Faculty.
After a brief intermission, the two winners will play for the Championship. The
Show-Me Jumpers will put their talents on display during the break!! You can
be a part of this hilarious event and help support your local TSA Chapter.
Advanced Admission is $6 – Tickets will be $8 at the door. Tickets can be
purchased in the main offices at North High School and Rock Creek Elementary.
Do not worry about preparing dinner; there will be a full Concession Stand available!

K from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. collecting donations for the Heartland Humane Society. Anyone who donates a minimum of $5.00 will receive a student made dog bandana that will slip over a dog’s collar.

The Heartland Humane society is a non-profit group of dedicated foster homes that gives abandoned, abused and unwanted animals another chance for loving, permanent homes through their adoption program, following the no-kill philosophy.

This year at DuBray Middle School Student Council members collected over 1000 canned goods for the O.A.S.I.S. food pantry. The campaign slogan was
"Helping Hands Bring in Cans". Students collected cans in the morning before
school and for every 5 cans donated, students wrote their names on a
handprint and placed it on the banner. STUCO was happy with the
participation and intends to run another food drive in the spring.
